My career as an Art Director started at the Barbie department at Toys 'R Us, where I realised my function
'in charge of the Barbie department' meant i was absolutely not in charge of the Barbie department.
('What do you mean with it's not up to me what the Barbie department looks like? Why am i not supposed to call Mattel Inc. for instore marterial suggestions? And why the hell is it none of my business how the barbies are displayed in 'Het Grote December Sinterklaarboek?'). I was 17.
For me, it was very clear I had to do something creative before i would turn into a crumpy old lady with a somewhat weird love for barbies,
but still not in charge of the Barbie department.
I became a student at the Junior Academy for Art Direction, Amsterdam, where i graduated in 2007.
And yes, it's still a big dream of mine to work for Mattel. As an Art Director.
